Woman killed in Sahiwal over remarriage in rival clan

SAHIWAL: A pregnant woman was shot dead by the family of her former husband over remarriage with the man of a rival tribe 18 months after her divorce at Thattapur Bhana on Friday.

Zohrain Bibi, 30, of Purbhana tribe, was first married to Maqsood, a resident of village Noor Shah. The couple had a son but Zohrain was not happy with Maqsood over domestic violence. Two years back, she got divorce from Maqsood through court and took her son along.

Maqsood, his paternal cousin, Shahbaz, and other family members had a grudge against Zohrain for taking divorce. They issued her threats of consequences.

Eighteen months back, Zohrain contracted marriage with Daulat Ali, a resident of village Thatha Purbhana, of her own choice. Daulat belonged to Sipra Jutt clan and the couple was living a normal life. Zohrain got pregnant also.

The Purbhana clan, especially the relatives of Zohrain’s former husband, took it a matter of dishonor for themselves that a woman who was once a member of their family had got married in the rival clan.

To take revenge, Shahbaz Purbhana, along with Allah Bakhsh and five unidentified persons, attacked Zohrain when she was busy baking bread at village tandoor. Shahbaz and others succeeded to escape from the scene. Zohrain got critically injured and died on her way to hospital.

Bahadur Shah Police registered a murder case against Shahbaz, Allah Bakhsh and five unidentified suspects on the complaint of Daulat Ali.
