LONDON: Speaker National Assembly Dr Fehmida Mirza met the Lord Speaker Baroness Hayman and Speaker, House of Commons, John Simon Bercow, MP, on Thursday.
Dr Mirza had a stopover in London after attending “women speakers’ parliamentary association meeting” in Vienna.
The two Houses made special arrangements for her to view the sessions in progress.
During the meeting, they exchanged views on the state of bilateral relations, regional and international issues of mutual interest and democratic process in Pakistan and undertook to promote parliamentary exchanges between the two countries.
Dr Mirza apprised the two speakers about the state of dislocated persons of Swat and Malakand and efforts made towards their assistance and rehabilitation.
She informed that there were 69,000 pregnant women among the displaced persons which led her to initiate an “adopt a child and mother” campaign till the rehabilitation of these people.
Highlighting the initiatives by the late Benazir Bhutto during her premiership for the empowerment of women in Pakistan, the Speaker mentioned the policies of the present PPP government to carry forward Ms Bhutto’s vision, new initiatives and legislations adopted to ensure protection of women.She extended invitation to the Lord Speaker and House of Common’s Speaker to visit Pakistan.
Lord Nazir Ahmad greeted the Speaker in the House of Lords and exchanged views with her on promoting Pakistan’s interest in the UK with a view to strengthening bilateral relations.
