NWFP to resist women law’s enforcement

ISLAMABAD, Feb 7: The Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal (MMA) government in the NWFP has decided not to allow enforcement of the Protection of Women Act as long as it is in power.

This was stated by the Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (Fazl) secretary-general Maulana Ghafoor Haideri while talking to newsmen at the parliament house chamber of the leader of the opposition on Wednesday. About the decision to quit the National Assembly, Maulana Haideri said no definite decision had been taken and the option was still open and the alliance could implement it in collaboration with all opposition parties.

JUI-F leader demanded of PML chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain to fulfil the promise that he would resign from the assembly if someone proved that the law contained a single un-Islamic clause as countryÂ’s leading religious scholars had declared the bill to be repugnant to Islamic principles.

Maulana Haideri said that his party legislators had boycotted Wednesday’s proceedings of the lower house to protest the adoption of the Women Protection bill.

The JUI-F leader declared that all controversial and un-Islamic laws would be repealed if MMA came into power.
