Workplace harassment

The PPP-led coalition government deserves credit for making sexual harassment of women at workplace a criminal offence. However, the mere making of a law will not serve as a deterrent to the offence, just like other laws that do not allow crimes like robbery, street-mugging, rape, cartelisation, hoarding and land-grabbing etc.

It is the implementation of law by the state through its law-enforcement agencies which can curtail the crime rate and provide relief to law-abiding citizens. Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto always stood up for the protection of women and workers, just like her late father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto. It is now to be seen what action is taken by those who claim to be her political heirs.
