LAHORE: Pakistan PeopleÂ’s Party leader and MNA Sherry Rehman has said ruthless exploitation of working women at state and social level is a national tragedy.
Speaking as the chief guest at the oath-taking ceremony of the newly formed Women Workers Union office-bearers here on Sunday, the former federal information minister said working women were not only denied adequate wages but were also not even considered workers in many sectors. Coercive tactics were used to suppress them whenever they raised a voice for their rights, she added.
She said women were unable to secure their rights because they were not organised. They should organise themselves and rest assured that the PPP government would not only protect their rights but also ensure payment of prescribed minimum wages to them, she said.
Muttahida Labour Federation chairman Muhammad Yaqub, secretary general Hanif Ramay, SPO regional head Salman Abid, Women Workers Union president Shakila Firdaus and secretary general Shaheena Kausar also spoke on the occasion.
