DASKA/SARGODHA: Five women including two sisters and a man were killed ‘in the name of honour’ in separate incidents occurred in different areas on Monday.

In Sargodha, a man identified as Umer Hayat gunned down his two sisters – Noreen, 30, and Razia Bibi, 22 – on suspicion of having ‘bad character.’ The incident occurred in suburban village 41 North in the jurisdictions of Satellite Town Police. The killer managed to flee the scene after the crime.

In village 58 South in the remit of Atta Shaheed Police, Tasawar allegedly murdered his wife – 24-year-old Kausar – with repeated blows of dagger for ‘honour.’ The respective police have registered separate cases and handed over the bodies to the heirs after post-mortem.

In Daska, a local landlord along with his two wives was gunned down alleged over ‘free-will marriage issue’ in village Dholleywali on Monday.

Landlord Mushtaq Ghuman had three daughters from his first wife Sajeela Firdous. His family, however, wanted to have a son of him and had developed pressure over him for second marriage ‘for a son.’ In the meantime, he developed illicit relations with a Bahawalpur-based woman Gul Naz Bibi and contracted second marriage with her, against the will of her parents, some two years ago. Unluckily, Gul Naz also gave birth to a girl a year ago. On the other hand, her parents were annoyed over her ‘love marriage’ with Mushtaq and used to hurl threats of dire consequences.

On Monday, Gul Naz’s father Tariq, uncle Zia and nephew Khurram arrived here from Bahawalpur. They allegedly stormed into her house in village Dholleywali. They started indiscriminate firing, killing Mushtaq, his first wife Sajeela Firdous and second wife Gul Naz on the spot. The accused fled away on a motorcycle ‘raising victory slogans.’

The Daska Saddr Police have registered a triple murder case against nominated accused Tariq,
Zia and Khurram on the report of slain landlord’s brother Ehsan Ullah, with no arrest, in this regard.

The police shifted the dead bodies to Daska Civil Hospital for autopsy. Sialkot SP (Investigations) Irfan Tariq Khan reached the spot and collected evidence and eye-witnesses accounts about the brutal murders.

He said that a special police team has started raids for early arrest of the killers.
Meanwhile, Hajipura locality, a 12-year-old Ameer Muaviya was gunned down after a failed patch up attempt to resolve a domestic issue at the home of victim’s uncle Muhammad Ashfaq Rehmani’s house. The Daska city police have registered a case.

Another girl killed over ‘dowry’

They would beat her up for not bringing ‘their desired’ dowry as she belonged to a poor family. On Monday, her in-laws allegedly thrashed her and ‘forcibly’ poured acid into her throat due to which her condition deteriorated. Neighbours took her to Daska Civil Hospital where she breathed her lasted. Doctors at the hospital said that “the girl died due to acid.”

The Daska City police have started investigation into the incident with no arrest, as the accused in-laws fled after locking up their house.

It is the second such incident occurred during the past one week in Daska tehsil.

The police claimed that two accused — Atif and Nadeem — both sons of Abdul Karim, residents of Quresh Colony were identified through the video. However, the girl could not be identified so far. The local police have become proactive against such incidents after the child sex abuse scandal in Kasur came to light last week.

Another 5 ‘child abusers’ arrested

KASUR: Police arrested five accused of the child sex abuse scandal from the courtroom after their bail pleas were turned down on Monday, raising the total number of perpetrators in custody to 12.

On the other hand, Kasur Civil Judge Shumaila Yaqoob extended remand of the seven accused who were already in police custody on a 10 days remand.

All these men were allegedly part of a 25-member gang which rendered children to sexual abuse, filmed the crime and sold those videos in form of CDs in Kasur’s Head Ganda Singh Wala area.

The five accused arrested on Monday had secured pre-arrest bails but Additional District and Sessions Judge Samina Hayat rejected their bail confirmation applications after a lawyer for the victims accused them of protecting the main culprits.

Wasim Sindhi, who was also on pre-arrest bail, did not show up in the court and his bail was also cancelled. There were reports about the arrest of another accused Saghir, son of Bashir. However, police neither confirmed nor showed his arrest in record.

The five men arrested from court were Saleem Akhtar Sherazi, a Health Department employee, Tanzeelur Rehman, an LHC clerk, Attiqur Rehman, a staffer of Lahore District and Sessions Court, Aleem Asif and Mohammad Yahya.

The Lahore High Court chief justice on Monday fired accused Tanzeelur Rehman from service.

Haseem Amir alias Haji, the main accused among those seven whose remand was extended, is said to be a graduate. He and his younger brother Naseem Shahzad were remanded in the police custody for two days. Basharat alias Chevar, Faizan Majeed and his brother Ali Majeed, Abdul Manan alias Wattoo and Usman Khalid were remanded for four days.

The police had requested extension in their remand to recover cell phones, pornographic movies, memory cards, CDs and ammunition from their possession.
AFP adds: At least 280 children were filmed being sexually abused by a gang of 25 men who used hundreds of videos they produced to blackmail the youngsters and their families, according to Latif Ahmed Sara, a lawyer and activist representing the victims.

Sara accused the police of dragging their feet – some of the videos date back to 2007. “The police are protecting the criminals, they are supporting them and have provided them an opportunity to escape the village,” Sara told reporters.

But an initial police probe, carried out last week at the behest of the provincial government described the allegations as “baseless”, a conclusion immediately rejected by local media and rights activists who said the case was just a tip of the iceberg.

District police chief Rai Baber Saeed told AFP that officers were doing their best to catch those responsible, but insisted there were no more than 30 victims and accused activists and media of exaggerating.

“Police have 30 video clips of the scandal involving 15 people. Seven of them have been arrested while four or five are on pre-arrest bail and the rest are absconders,” he told AFP before the latest arrests. He described the case as an old one, dragged up recently by a group of villagers as a tactic in a dispute over the sale of some land.

The independent Human Rights Commission of Pakistan said the property dispute did not detract from the horror of the abuse and demanded a thorough and impartial investigation, voicing doubts over the judicial commission ordered by the Punjab chief minister.

Mumtaz Hussain from Sahil, Pakistan’s leading campaign group working against child abuse, told AFP there were more than 3,500 registered cases last year – representing nearly 10 children a day being abused. But he said the true figure was far higher, perhaps as many as 10,000.

Delayed action: Second suspect arrested for burning woman, child

SUKKUR: The Ghotki police on Monday arrested another suspect for setting a woman and her daughter on fire after sexually assaulting them in Menhoon Mahar village within Khenjoo police limits. Khenjoo SHO Waheed Murad Pathan, speaking to The Express Tribune, said that a suspect, Gul Hassan Mochi, was arrested last Sunday and was produced in court on Monday, where he was remanded to police custody for three days. He said efforts were underway to arrest the remaining suspects. The police earlier arrested Noor Hassan Mochi, while a third suspect, Hashim Mochi, is still at large. Sources claimed that the police were reluctant to arrest the key suspect, landlord Menhoon Mahar, despite the fact that the apex court had taken notice of the incident and ordered the police to arrest all those involved. They further alleged that Gul was arrested 20 days ago and was kept at Mahar’s residence, only being produced in court due to mounting pressure by the media and the relatives of the victims.
