Red warrant issued for rape-accused lawyer

ISLAMABAD: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has issued a red warrant for a lawyer accused of raping his niece and fleeing to Malaysia to avoid prosecution.

This was stated by a representative of the agency during a hearing in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday.

In the previous hearing, IHC Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui summoned the FIA deputy director responsible for liaising with Interpol to appear before the court in response to a petition filed by the victim’s mother.

During the course of hearing, FIA Deputy Director Imran Shahid informed the court that the agency has issued red warrants for the accused, TM, and has also informed Interpol in Malaysia about the accused. The official assured the court that extradition process would be initiated once TM has been tracked down by Malaysian authorities.

The official informed the court that he has also forwarded the red notices to his Malaysian counterpart in Kuala Lumpur. In the letter sent to Interpol Kuala Lumpur, Imran Shahid stated that, “The accused is subject to a red notice on the charges of rape and is wanted by our law enforcement authorities,” said the official.

A petition seeking court orders to arrest the accused through Interpol had been filed last week by the victim’s mother last week.

On September 30, 2013, New Town police had registered a First Information Report (FIR) against TM, the vice president of Fateh Jhang Bar Association, and his accomplice AHB for raping his niece MJ.
The FIR alleges that both the accused filmed the incident to blackmail the victim into silence. After the police arrested both accused TM managed to obtain bail from the Peshawar High Court (PHC) and immediately fled the country.
