Police stop teenager’s marriage with child

SUKKUR: Police saved a teenage girl when her father was forcing her into marrying his 10-year-old nephew in the Dawood Ghunio village near Thull town on Monday.

Ms Farzana, 17, started arguing loudly with her father Mohammad Dawood Ghunio who was elder of the village when Nazar Mohammad Ghunio along with his son Irfan Ahmed, 10, and a maulvi arrived at her house to solemnise the nikkah.

A neighbour heard her loud arguments and informed police. Nazar Mohammad, his son and the maulvi escaped when they saw police coming. Police arrested the girl’s father and took her in protective custody. She was later produced in the court of district and sessions judge of Jacobabad Syed Irshad Ali Shah.

The girl told the court that her father was forcibly marrying her to her minor cousin, therefore, she did not want to go with him and opted to go with her maternal uncle Abdul Hameed Ghunio. The court allowed her to go with her maternal uncle.
