Police pre-empt underage marriage

MULTAN: Police have preempted an underage marriage in People`s Colony, Multan.

Mumtazabad police said they learnt about the marriage of 12-year-old Madiha, of People`s Colony, with 55-year-old Muhammad Saddique. Police learnt Saddique had given a cheque for Rs300,000 to Abdul Rashid, father of the girl, as price of the hand.

Mumtazabad Station House Officer Malik Arshad said the police had produced the girl before a duty magistrate where she requested the court to allow her to go to her elder sister.

“The court ordered police to produce the girl before the area magistrate on Monday and ordered shifting her to Darul Aman, he said. He said the medical examination of the girl would be conducted to know her age. He said that the father and would-be groom were in police custody.
