Parents refuse to bury ‘Kari’ daughters

Karachi: The parents of two young women murdered on Friday night on the pretext of Karo-Kari (“honour” killing) in Moro, Sindh, refused to bury their daughters as a result of which the area police along with officials from the Edhi Welfare Foundation arranged for their funeral. The parents of the boys (declared Karo), however, took their bodies.

Anwar Kazmi of the Edhi Foundation said that 22-year-old Nimati (daughter of Khamisa Chandio) and 27-year-old Daadli (daughter of Rahib Chandio), from the Chandio tribe in Sindh, were disowned by their parents the minute the girls were declared Kari. This is why the parents did not come to claim their bodies which were lying at the Edhi centre branch in Moro

“We called them several times, but they refused to take the bodies so our officials in Moro buried them in the local graveyard on Saturday morning,” Kazmi told The News.

However, bodies of 27-year-old Majeed and 33-year old Shah Band, who belonged to the Malah tribe, were claimed by their parents when the latter were contacted by Edhi officials. Moro is a city in district Naushero Feroze, Sindh, where deaths over Karo-Kari are common.
