ISLAMABAD: Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader and MNA Wasim Akhtar on Monday said that his party believed in women empowerment.Talking to the APP, he said that the party always voiced for the resolution of problems faced by women and was very much committed to this cause.
“Yes, my party wants an expedient and effective legislation for the protection of women’s rights, especially harassment at workplaces and violence against women,” he added. Akhtar said the MQM had also fully backed the Women Protection Act for ensuring the women’s rights in 2007.
“We also held talks with the PPP and other like-minded parties for their support on the Women Protection Bill. However, the government has not taken us on board,î he said.
He added that they had not been contacted for supporting the act, adding, ìwe havenÃt been provided a copy of the Protection Against Harassment Bill, which has already been passed by the federal cabinet.” The MQM leader said that once they were provided a copy of the bill, the party leadership would discuss it at length in a party meeting. Then we would decide whether to support the bill or not, he added.
