RAWALPINDI: A man fired gunshots on his wife at district courts for approaching court for divorce. While the woman remained unhurt, her husband fled. According to police, Zakia Bibi, of Sadiqabad, got married with Azhar Mehmood, of New Phagwari, 10 months ago but frequent domestic quarrels forced her to apply for a divorce through court. During Monday’s hearing of the divorce plea, Azhar requested the court to let them decide the matter in lawyer’s chamber.
The court accepted the request and allowed the couple an out-of-the-court settlement of the issue. The man, however, opened fire on his wife in lawyer Abdul Hameed’s Mohammedan Block chamber. However, the woman remained unharmed. The assailant managed to flee brandishing gun. Civil Lines police registered a murder attempt’s case against Azhar on the complaint of Zakia’s brother and began investigation. An eyewitness said the attacker warned people present in the chamber and outside to stay away from him otherwise he would kill him. Lawyers and litigants said the firing had frightened them. They criticised police for insufficient personnel deployment at district courts and said policeÂ’s negligence to people’s safety could lead to a human tragedy. The investigation officer said the attacker would soon be arrested.
