ISLAMABAD- Global human rights watchdog, Amnesty International (AI) has said the government of India must take immediate steps to end all kinds of torture and other ill treatment, in accordance with the AI charter.
The programme director of AI for Asia Pacific, Sam Zarifi in a letter to the Indian Home Minister, P Chidambaram said that the human rights watchdog continued to receive reports of torture and ill treatment of individuals in custody from Jammu and Kashmir, KMS reported. “I am writing to express concern of Amnesty International that torture and other cruel inhuman treatment or punishment are still inflicted widely throughout India,” Zarifi said and asked India to ratify the UN convention against torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
The letter stated that even after 12 years of its existence, India was yet to ratify the convention. “Also, despite repeated requests since 1992, India has not extended an invitation to the UN special rapporteur on torture and other cruel inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment,” the letter added.
