High Alert Declared for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Highways Amid Landslide Fears

Islamabad, 27-Jan-2026 (PPI): Authorities have issued a high alert for travellers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, citing heavy snowfall and a significant risk of landslides across several key national highways. The National Highway Authority (NHA) has cautioned commuters against unnecessary journeys on routes N-45, N-145, N-95, and N-90, which pass through the vulnerable districts of Dir, Chitral, Swat, and Shangla.

In response to the severe conditions, NHA field teams and heavy machinery have been stationed at critical points for continuous, 24/7 monitoring to ensure these essential links remain functional. The authority has also mandated the use of “grip chains” on tyres for all vehicles navigating the snow-affected areas to prevent accidents.

The intensified field operations are a direct execution of standing instructions from the Federal Minister for Communications, who has mandated a zero-tolerance policy for road blockages and has prioritised the absolute safety of the public. NHA field formations are working tirelessly in shifts to manage the challenges posed by the ongoing winter weather.

Despite the challenging conditions elsewhere, the organisation confirmed that other major arteries remain clear. The Islamabad-Murree Dual Carriageway (IMDC) is fully functional for all traffic, accommodating a recent influx of tourists. Similarly, in Balochistan, the N-25 section through Khojak Top and Lak Pass is open following persistent snow removal and salt sprinkling efforts.

NHA management has reiterated its commitment to ensuring a safe and smooth travel experience across the national network. Field staff are in constant coordination with traffic police to maintain traffic flow, and travellers are urged to strictly adhere to official instructions and report any emergencies to NHA personnel immediately.
