Five women crisis centres for AJK, NWFP planned

ISLAMABAD (November 15 2007): The Women Development Ministry will establish five women crisis centres in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and NWFP to be funded by Earthquake Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Authority (Erra).

Sources in the Women Development Ministry told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that 6 kanals of land would be allotted for each centre in the earthquake-hit areas of AJK and NWFP. They said that main objective of these centres in earthquake-hit areas was to provide shelter to widows and orphans especially girls who lost their families in the disastrous earthquake of 2005.

In the initial stage, the women crisis centres will be established in Mansehra in NWFP, Muzaffarabad and in AJK, they said. Sources said that PC-I will be prepared soon and every centre will have shelter home for destitute women and residential apartments for the staff. They said that construction, furnishing and management of the centres will be done by the Erra.

Sources said that 16 women crisis centres would be established in far-flung areas of Balochistan and Sindh. Moreover centres will also be established in Northern Areas (Gilgit and Sakardu), they added.
