Five jirga members nabbed in Vani case

MANSEHRA: The police arrested five members of a jirga and recovered two sisters who were being handed over to their rivals as vani to settle a marriage dispute in Pulrah area in Oghi tehsil.

“We have arrested five people and recovered the two sisters who were being handed over to their rival party to settle a matrimonial dispute,” Deputy Superintendent of Police, Oghi, Salman Khan told reporters here on Sunday.

He said a joint team of Mansehra and Oghi police raided a house and recovered the two sisters who were being handed over to their rivals to settle a marriage dispute. The DSP said that a jirga was held at a mosque in Pulrah to settle the dispute.

Salman Khan said that the prayer leader of the mosque Maulana Israr, who was leading the jirga, was opposed to the handover of two girls to the rival party as vani. The official said that other members of jirga decided to hand over the two girls to rivals as vani. “We raided the place when the Nikah was being solemnised and recovered two girls and arrested the five jirga members,” he said. The DSP said that girls were sent to Darul Aman in Abbottabad. The arrested persons were identified as Riaz, Faqir, Haider, Badri and Sain.
