‘Eliminate socio-economic inequality to curb violence against womenÂ’

LAHORE: In order to curb violence against women people need to eliminate socio-economic inequality from society, said HRCP Chairperson Asma Jahangir on Tuesday.

She was presiding over a dialogue session on violence against women. The Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO) organised the session under the Women’s Protection Project at the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) hall on Tuesday.

The project is being run in collaboration with the German non-governmental organisation GTZ, in the six districts of Punjab. Various state institutions, including Darul Amaan, the police, and social welfare organisations are coordinating the project. Citizen’s Commission for Human Development Executive Director Farah Pervez Saleh stressed family education. She said all members of a family, especially females, should be provided with equal access to education. She said people should also be educated on violence against women.

SPO spokesman Salman Abid said law enforcers should provide social and legal protection to victims. He said that their attitude towards women was biased, which increased the prevailing problem.Lawyers, social activists, journalists and human rights activists attended the session.
