Demo in Hyderabad against underage marriages

HYDERABAD: Dozens of female activists and workers of the civil society groups here on Tuesday staged a demonstration outside the Hyderabad Press Club against the marriage of minor girls to settle tribal disputes.

The Society for the Protection of the Rights of the Child (SPARC) organised the demonstration in which activists of the Sindhiani Tehreek also participated. The demonstrators held banners and placards and chanted slogans against the tribal disputes and the marriage of minor girls in the name of settlement.

Meanwhile, the newly-elected Chairman of the Liberal Forum Pakistan, Anees Jilani, advocate, M Parkash, SPARC Sindh Protection Manager Kashif Bajeer, SPO Regional head Mustafa Baloch and others urged the federal and Sindh governments to immediately intervene to save the 15 underage girls of the Chakrani tribe who were engaged to “marry” the Qalandari tribesmen to settle a bloody feud between the two tribes, said a press release. The leaders expressed their shock over the incident and said marrying off the underage girls to settle tribal disputes or crimes like murder or adultery continued to be a common practice among the tribes of Sindh and Balochistan.
