Cabinet welcomes passage of Women’s Protection Bill

ISLAMABAD: The federal cabinet congratulated the president and the prime minister on the passage of the Protection of Women Bill, on Wednesday. The cabinet viewed the bill as the first step towards women’s emancipation in Pakistan, Information Minister Muhammad Ali Durrani told a press conference after the cabinet meeting. He said the cabinet was given a detailed briefing on the Pakistan-India composite dialogue. The cabinet held that to ensure durable peace in the subcontinent, it was imperative that the Kashmir issue should be resolved in accordance with the aspiration of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. The information minister said confidence building measures must have continuity and aim to resolve the core disputes between the two neighbouring countries.

He said the recent “historic” visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to Pakistan would promote bilateral relations between the two countries. The signing of a free trade agreement (FTA) would increase bilateral trade to $15 billion, and open up the world’s fastest growing market to Pakistani exporters and manufacturers, he said. The federal cabinet approved the Family Laws (Amendment) Bill 2006 in compliance with a Supreme Court order. In its order the apex court had directed the government to amend Section 310-A of the Pakistan Penal Code. The cabinet decided the amendment bill would be presented in parliament. The cabinet also approved signing of an agreement between Pakistan and Zimbabwe on deputation of Pakistan Air Force flight instructors to Zimbabwe; a cooperation agreement between the Export Promotion Bureau of Pakistan and the Export Promotion Agency of Argentina; the signing of the Protocol on Preferential Tariff Scheme for TPS-OIC (PRETAS) among Organisation of Islamic Countries states; an agreement with Vietnam on visa exemption for holders of diplomatic and official passports; and the start of negotiations on a draft agreement between Pakistan and Morocco on combating terrorism.
