Action ordered against NAB for harassing journalist’s widow

ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Thursday directed to take action against officials of the National Accountability Bureau for arresting and harassing the widow of a journalist.

A three-member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and comprising Justice Ch Ijaz Ahmed and Justice Jawwad S. Khwaja was hearing a suo motu notice taken by former chief justice Irshad Hassan Khan in 2000.

According to the case, the late Aleem Pathan, a Karachi-based journalist, had taken loan from the House Building Finance Corporation.

After a delay in payment of instalments, a NAB team raided his house, arrested his wife Shamim Aleem. The officials of NAB and HBFC also harassed Mrs Aleem Pathan.

The Chief Justice said that law breakers could not be spared and ordered action against the officials involved in the incident, adding that a report on the matter be submitted with the Registrar Office.
