NCSW stresses women’s safe, free participation in polls

LAHORE: National Commission on Status of Women (NCSW) Secretary Khawaja Imran Raza has said women must feel safe and secure to freely participate in the general election and the state institutions must ensure a non-discriminatory and protected environment for them to exercise their right to vote.

He was delivering his inaugural address at a two-day 21st Inter-Provincial Ministerial Group conference, hosted by the NCSW in collaboration with the UN Women here the other day.

NCSW Chairperson Ms. Nilofar Bakhtiar, UN Women Country Representative Ms. Sharmeela Rasool, and US Consul General Ms. Kristin Hawkins also spoke. Minister for Human Rights Khalil George attended the conference.

The federal secretary said national narrative of women empowerment should be followed based on gender equality, equal rights, and equal opportunities. Nowhere women should be discriminated against and nowhere they should face harassment or violence.

Later, Kh Imran Raza told the media that due to Pakistan’s national and international commitments, the NCSW was mandated to protect, advance, and promote equal rights for women and ensure that they were not exploited or abused, beguiled, or tricked.

He said that as per the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) commitments and as enshrined in the Constitution of 1973, it was obligatory on the state apparatus to ensure that women and girls participation in politics andelections should be free from any discriminatory practice.

Khawaja Imran said that during the upcoming elections, all government functionaries must provide fair and impartial treatment to all women candidates, supporters, and voters so that they could exercise their free will. He said that gender parity and women empowerment goals were not only a moral imperative, but it was also fundamental catalysts for social, economic, political, and cultural advancement in the country.

Woman from minorities files papers in Buner

PESHAWAR: For the first time ever, a young woman from minorities has filed nomination papers for a general seat from Buner district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the coming general elections.

Dr Saveera Parkash, is flexing muscles for a seat in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa assembly. She is hopeful for a ticket of the Pakistan People’s Party for PK-25, Buner.

Dr Saveera is the daughter of philanthropist Dr Om Parkash from Daggar. Her father was associated with the PPP for the last over three decades. A number of people on social media has welcomed the decision of a female from Hindu minorities contesting polls for a general seat in the KP Assembly.

Dr Saveera has completed her MBBS studies last year from Abbotabad. Apart from PK-25, she is also a contender for the reserved seats.

Man stabs wife to death; resident shot dead in Swabi

SWABI: Two people, including a woman, died while a young girl sustained injuries in separate incidents here on Monday, the police said.

The police said Umar Rahim, a resident of Matta Swat, and presently living in Karnal Sher Khan village, stabbed to death her wife after exchanging hot words with her over a trivial issue.

Tur Sam Khan, father of the deceased, got registered an FIR against his son-in-law in Kalu Khan police station.

Meanwhile, unidentified assailants shot dead Niqab Ali and injured his young daughter outside their house in Karnal Sher Khan village on Sunday night, the police said, adding the reason for the murder and identity of the accused were not known.

Woman shot dead

SUKKUR: A woman was shot dead in Mithal Jamali village within the limits of the Jamalpur police station of Shikarpur district on Saturday.

The police believed that the victim, Naumina Bano, was killed by her close relative, Wahid Bakhsh Jamali, in the name of honour as they had some matrimonial issues.

Shikarpur SSP Dr Mohammad Imran Khan asked the DSP concerned to ensure arrest of the suspected killer.

A team led by the Jamalpur SHO cordoned off the area and mounted a search for the suspect.
