Two women murdered by in-laws in honour killing in Rahim Yar Khan

BAHAWALPUR: Two women were killed for ‘honour’ in two incidents in Rahim Yar Khan on Saturday night.

Police said Rashid Ali, a resident of Bahanwala village, Liaquatpur Tehsil, Rahim Yar Khan, had suspected that his sister-in-law was having an affair with one of their neighbours. On Saturday night, he had an altercation with his 32-year-old sister-in-law after which he used an axe to kill her. Police said that Ali had fled. They said they had sent the body to a mortuary for post-mortem examination and later handed it over to the family for burial. They said they were looking for Ali.

The second incident took place in Kotla village, Rahim Yar Khan, on Saturday night. Police said Abdul Hameed, Aashiq Hussain, Abdul Wahid, Muhammad Irshad, Kareem Bakhsh, Munir Ahmad, Muhammad Altaf, Muhammad Irshad, Ibrahim and Muhammad Umar attacked a woman and her alleged paramour at her house. Police said the woman was Hameed’s daughter-in-law.

Police said the men had beaten up the woman and the man before they used an axe to kill her.

Police said the man was critically injured and was taken to a hospital where doctors treating him said his condition was serious. They said they had sent the body to a mortuary for post-mortem examination.

Police said they had registered FIRs in both cases and were looking for the culprits.

WoW: Women On Wheels hit the road in Lahore

LAHORE: About 150 women motorcyclists after completing training with the collaboration of Special Monitoring Unit on Law & Order and City Traffic Police participated in the Women on Wheels (WoW) rally in Lahore.

The rally, a move to encourage female bike riding, was also attended by Austrian Ambassador Brigitta Balaha, prominent lawyer and human rights activist Asma Jahangir.

Dawn Newspaper reported that the Punjab Chief Minister’s Special Monitoring Unit (SMU) on Law and Order and City Traffic Police had jointly trained the women at City Traffic Police Driving School in Thokar Niaz Baig.

Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif announced that about 1,000 pink scooters would be given to working women and students at a 50 per cent subsidised rate under the WoW project.

The programme would be implemented from the International Women’s Day. The chief minister said that the project would focus on women under 40 to encourage the next generation to join the national development efforts. A traffic police spokesman said that more than 150 women had completed training at their driving school.

He said the training plan was designed to enable the women to acquire the riding skill in a few weeks.

Austrian Ambassador Brigitta Blaha and prominent lawyer Asma Jahangir also participated in the rally. Danish Ambassador Helen Neilson, American Consul General in Lahore Zachary Harkenrider, UN Women Country Representative Jamshed Qazi, prominent motorcyclist from Singapore Juvena Huang, Provincial Minister for Population Welfare Zakia Shahnawaz, Minister for Women Development Hameeda Waheeduddin and SMU’s Salman Sufi also attended the event.

Girl kidnapped, raped

KARACHI: A 20-year-old girl was allegedly kidnapped while returning home from a girls’ college in Saudabad on Jan 7 and was found near Memon Goth on Sunday night after being subjected to criminal assault, police and hospital officials said.

A senior doctor told Dawn that the girl was admitted to JPMC for treatment and her medical examination was conducted by a lady medico-legal officer. She was subjected to criminal assault.
