Man kills mother over ‘honour’

SUKKUR: A woman was gunned down on Thursday night by her son on the pretext of karo-kari near Pannu Aquil, said the police.

The incident took place in Khaderi village within the remit of the Khaderi police station.

Police said that Roshan Machi opened fire on his mother Mai Zeenat Khatoon, who died on the spot.
The victim’s body was then thrown in the Indus River which passes through the village, the police said, adding that efforts were being made to try to recover the body.

Meanwhile, said the Khaderi police, Roshan Machi had been arrested.

IED blast near PPP MPA’s house slammed

Workers of the Pakistan Peoples Party on Thursday organised a protest rally in Thull, Jacobabad district, to protest over an IED explosion near the house of MPA Dr Sohrab Sarki a day earlier.

A blast had occurred through an improvised explosive device planted near the lawmaker’s house in Garhi Hassan Sarki village near Thull. The rally began from main bazaar and ended at the local press club. Speaking on the occasion, local PPP leaders demanded immediate arrest of culprits and provision of fool-proof security to MPA Sarki.

Sisters shot dead in Mardan

MARDAN: Two sisters were killed here on Thursday when the fiancé of one of the girls along with his brother and an unknown accomplice barged into their house and opened fire.

Officials of Saddar police station quoted Fazal Malik, father of the slain girls identified as Sawera and Feroza, as saying that his daughter Sawera was engaged with his nephew Javed a few months ago.

He said both the families developed differences over the education of Sewara, who was studying in class eighth. He told Saddar police that the accused, Javed, his brother Islam Gul and their unknown accomplice barged into their home in broad daylight and opened indiscriminate fire killing his daughter Feroza on the spot while leaving Sawera with critical bullet injuries.

Sawera later succumbed to her injuries when the personnel of Recue-1122 were shifting her to a nearby health facility. The police have lodged an FIR.

Cells for sexual harassment complaints to be set up

Karachi: The office for provincial ombudsman for implementation of law against sexual harassment at workplace would soon establish its complaint cells at district levels all over the province in the towns of Thatta, Nawabshah, Hyderabad, Khairpur, Larkana.

This was stated by provincial ombudsman for law against sexual harassment at workplace, Pir Ali Shah while talking to officials of his office on completion of one year of functioning of his institution, on Thursday.

The ombudsman said that his office had been trying its best to constitute a three-member committee in every department of the government for entertaining and processing complaints related to sexual harassment at workplace. In this regard, efforts were also being made for imposition of law against sexual harassment at workplace, at all non-governmental and private organisations.

He said that his office using least possible time had resolved several complaints of working women regarding sexual harassment at workplace while such cases were resolved within the time frame stipulated in the concerned law.

Lady health worker, daughter shot dead

TANK: Unidentified persons shot dead a lady health worker and her daughter inside their home here on Thursday, sources said.

Shakirullah told the police that unidentified persons forced their entry into his home and opened fire on his mother and sister. He said his mother, who was a lady health worker, was killed on the spot while his sister sustained injuries.

The injured was shifted to District Headquarters Hospital in Tank where she succumbed to her injuries. He said his mother had a dispute with her former husband.

Demand for girls school in Baldia

KARACHI: The local womenfolk of Itehad Town of Baldia, labeled as one of the strongholds of Taliban, staged a protest on Thursday, demanding establishment of girls’ school in the area.

A large number of women and young girls participated in the rally, organised by Takleeq Foundation at Karachi Press Club on Thursday. They were holding banner and placards and chanted slogans in favor of their demands.

“There is not a single school in UC-01, UC-2 and UC-03 of Itehad town and there is only one school for girls in the entire town is in the UC-4, due to which the children, especially female students are not able to attend the schools,” said Najma, a participant.

Participants said majority of residents were Pakhtun, who did not have enough resources to bear education expenses for their girls.

“We conducted a survey, and found at least 1,000 girls cannot fo to school,” said Sheerin Soomro, Constituency Coordinator for NA-239, of Takhleeq Foundation.

During the rally, 300 girl students signed a campaign and demanded government to establish a school in the their area.
