US women chamber team due next month

ISLAMABAD – The United States Commerce Department is sending a representative delegation of the Colorado Women Chamber of Commerce (CWCC) next month for initiation of joint venture with Pakistani women entrepreneurs in various sectors.

The seven-member delegation, to be led by CWCC president Keller Hayes, would visit Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad and Multan and hold meetings with Pakistani women entrepreneurs to discuss possibilities of cooperation and joint venture between them.

Chief operating officer of the Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry, (WCCI), Omer Aftab told reporters here on April 23 that Pakistani women entrepreneurs had potential to exploit US market by exporting various items.

He said that the visit of CWCC delegation would provide an opportunity to Pakistani women entrepreneurs to enter the US market. Furthermore, interaction with US women entrepreneurs would provide competitive edge to Pakistani businesswomen. He was of the view that US businesswomen must start joint ventures with their Pakistani counterparts in various fields like garments, jewelry, handicrafts, livestock, textile products, machinery, sports goods, herbal cosmetics, etc.

Woman set on fire

KARACHI – A woman, Afzal Bibi, 35, was allegedly set on fire by her husband, Ali Asghar in Gilgat Colony Korangi on April 23 according to Zaman Town Police.

She was admitted in Civil Hospital with 97 percent burns, where she died later. In her statement, Afzal Bibi said that she was asleep, when her husband torched her by throwing oil on her body. Police said, she married with Ali Asghar around 16 years ago and was childless. Several medical tests were conducted but nothing proved wrong in her case. Later, she forced her husband to get tested as he was found impotent. So it was the bone of contention between two, police said.

Woman strangled to death

A woman, Nadia, 20, w/o Ali Gohar was strangled to death in her house in Korangi 2, Sector 48-D, according to Zaman Town Police.

A girl, Nasrin, 9, was present in the house at the time of incident, who identified the suspect as Shahid, the brother-in-law of Ali Gohar.

Police suspected that woman was raped too. Police registered case against the culprit, who had run away.

Body found

A few days old body of an unknown man, in his fifties, was found floating on water in sea near Ghas Bandar, according to Docks Police. The corpse was, shifted to Edhi morgue.

US lady journalist held

PESHAWAR – An official handout issued in Peshawar on April 23 said that US citizen Miss Griswold Aliza Tracy, who is a freelance journalist, was caught while trying to cross over to the tribal areas from Bannu illegally.

The lady was dressed in burqa and tribal clothes; she had no other travelling documents except for a visit visa. She was later handed over to the ISPR and then to Press Information Department, after investigation she was sent to Islamabad.
