WPC to hold three-day National Women Convention
ISLAMABAD: Working Council of Women Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) will hold a three-day National Women Convention in Islamabad from October 30th to November 1st, 2009, with the theme “role of women parliamentarians in peace building and reconciliation”. The decision was made in a meeting of Working Council of the Women Parliamentary Caucus held in the Parliament House on Monday.
Chairing meeting of the Working Council of WPC, the Speaker National Assembly, Dr Fehmida Mirza said that the women empowerment was essential for development and prosperity as well as strengthening of democracy in the country. She said that women folk consisted of more than 50 percent of the country’s population and could play a decisive role in country’s prosperity and progress. She said that the women Caucus in the Parliament was playing active role in empowerment of the women and was instrumental in making legislation for their protection.
She said that the role of Women Caucus would be extended to all the four provinces and AJK and Gilgit Baltistan, adding that the ambit of the Caucus would further be extended to regional states at appropriate time. Briefing the meeting of the Working Council, the Secretary General, Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, Nafisa Shah informed that the convention will be an opportunity for parliamentarians and human rights activist of the country and the region to speak their voice and channelise their energies for the better and effective role for the reconciliation and peace and prosperity of the country and the region.
