Would-be bride ‘killed for honour’

LAHORE: A 20-year-old girl was killed allegedly by her father in the name of honour just two days before her marriage in the Shahdara police precinct.

The girl was identified as Asma, a resident of Fazal Park, Begumkot. Shahdara SHO Shahzad Mehmood said that the parents of the deceased did not inform the police about the incident.

He said that some neighbours visited the house early Thursday morning and found Asma dead. The family told the neighbours that Asma had committed suicide by hanging herself over some unknown reasons just two days before her marriage. He said that locals informed the police about the incident. The SHO said that after receiving call, the police reached the house and found Asma’s body in the bed with small peace of rope around her neck. He said that the police termed the incident ‘suspicious’, as they did not find any place that could be used for hanging herself. The SHO said that initial investigation suggested that the incident was a murder and not a suicide.

He said that absence of evidence to substantiate the claim of a suicide and the family’s behaviour – since they did not inform the police after several hours of the death – proved that the family was concealing facts, and that it could be a murder case.

The SHO believed that the father of the victim, Muhammad Shafi, killed her in the name of honour. Police collected all available evidence from the crime scene and started investigation on different angels. Police said that the actual cause of death would be ascertained after comprehensive investigation and the post-mortem report.

However, police have registered a case of murder against unidentified persons on the complaint of the deceased’s brother, Kashif. The body was shifted to the morgue for an autopsy.
