Women’s role vital to peace-building efforts

LAHORE: Punjab Minister for Women Development, Hameeda Waheed-ud-Din has said that women, all over the world, can play a pivotal role in international peace and stability by utilizing their talent and energies.

According DGPR, she was speaking as a panellist in a seminar on “Peace-Building, National Reconciliation and Democratization in Asia” held at the United Nations University Tokyo on Monday.

Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida presented a keynote speech. A number of prominent figures, officials and experts from government, international organisations and academia who had vast experience in the area of peace-building, national reconciliation and democratization in Asian countries attended the seminar.

Hameeda Waheed-ud-Din said that enhancing the participation of women in conflict resolution and peace-building efforts is the key to achieve security and stability across the world. She highlighted the efforts of Pakistan in general and government of Punjab in particular in promoting and protecting political, economic, social and cultural rights of women.

Hameeda Waheed-ud-Din further stated that it is imperative that international community including all segments of society continue to support and facilitate peace-building and reconciliation efforts and strengthen democratic institutions. She, appreciating the role of government of Japan, expressed the hope that seminars such as these will further develop understanding among the countries.
