Women empowerment be made part of development policy: speakers

The government was urged to incorporate women empowerment in the national development policy. The recommendation was made at a regional peace conference on moderating extremism in Pakistan organised by Paiman Alumni Trust here on Thursday.

The theme of conference was ‘Mothers for Change’ with the objectives to provide a platform for a discourse on roots causes of extremism and ways of engaging mothers and youth in moderating extremism in Pakistan.

Speakers appreciated the work done by Paiman Trust and stressed the need for timely implementation of recommendations presented in the study in order to offset the effects of extremism. Syed Akhter Ali Shah Additional IG Special Branch, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa in his address said that improved public delivery service can improve the ground situation. He asked the political parties, civil society organisations and government departments to come forward and play their respective roles for better delivery of public services.

Mossarat Qadeem caretaker Minister for Information, Education and Social Welfare Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa appreciated Paiman for conducting a difficult survey in militancy-hit areas of the province and Fata. She hoped that the recommendations made in the report will be implemented in letter and spirit by relevant stakeholders.

Earlier, the chairperson of the trust Shafqat Mehmood in his welcome address said that survey moderating extremism in Pakistan is currently undergoing in three districts of KPK and Mohammed Agency in FATA. He specifically mentioned the findings and recommendations of Baseline survey that was conducted by Paiman in Peshawar, Charsadda, Swat and Mohmand Agency. He said that the objectives of the survey were to identify the level of extremism among women and youth in the target areas and to find out the root causes, motivation and impact of violent extremism among youth and women of the proposed area besides discovering the role of women, particularly mothers, in combating violent extremism.
