Woman jumps in river with her two children, all drown

MUZAFFARABAD: Up to five people were killed on Monday in two separate incidents in the capital city of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

In the first incident, a woman allegedly committed murder-suicide by jumping into Neelum River while holder her two minor children.

According to the police, Sajda Bibi of Chelabandi, on the outskirts of Muzaffarabad, jumped into the river from Chelabandi Bridge while holding her sons, Ahtasham, 8, and Hasnain, 6. Rescue 1122 teams recovered Sajda’s body some five kilometres from Chelabandi, while the two children are still missing. Rescue 1122 has asked checkpoints at Kohala, Azad Pattan and Mangla to keep an eye out and inform the Rescue 1122 Muzaffarabad control room if they find the bodies.

According to the police, Sajda’s husband is working in Dubai. On Monday, they had a heated argument over the phone over a domestic issue. After the phone call, Sajda took her children to the bridge and jumped into the river.

Meanwhile, two people are presumed dead when a jeep fell into Jehlum River on Monday. According to the police, two men were swept away by the currents after their jeep (AJK-312) fell into the river near Karoli, some 25 kilometres from here. They were identified as Raja Zia and Raza Hussain.

Rescue 1122 teams rushed to the spot but had been unable to retrieve their bodies from the river till the filing of this report.
