Woman jumps off Native Jetty Bridge

Karachi, Tuesday, July 08, 2008: A 35-year-old woman, Mala was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK), after she was taken out from the water under the Native Jetty Bridge.

Mala, a resident of Gulshan-e-Iqbal, University road, attempted suicide by jumping off the bridge. Chhipa workers took her out of the water and brought her to the CHK, where she is said to be in a serious condition.

According to the information received by The News, Mala’s husband, Ramesh was taken into the Jackson police custody, for questioning. In his statement, Ramesh said that Mala and he had a fight, over which she became angry and went to commit suicide. At the moment, the Jackson police said, that no Investigating Officer has been assigned the task yet, as the case is against Mala herself for suicide attempt, and her statement has not been taken.

Mala has been shifted to the Neurological Intensive Cae Unit, where her doctor on duty, Dr Fayyaz Ahmed says that it is feared she may have pneumonia, however, at the moment, her condition is stable. However, if her condition worsens, she will have to be put on a ventilator. Mala’s parents say they do not know why their daughter would act in such a way as they always found her to be happily married. She has two young daughters.
