Woman dies of acid burns

MULTAN: Shamim Mai (22) succumbed to acid burns in Nishtar Hospital Multan on Tuesday. Her husband’s younger brother Muhammad Din threw acid on her when she was sleeping at her parents’ home in village Mohana Sandeela (Jalalpur pirwala) some 65-km south of Multan. CPO Multan Ghulam Mehmood Dogar said:”We have arrested the main culprit Nadeem Ahmed; however, his two accomplices are still at large.” Punjab Chief Minister Mian Shahbaz Sharif also took a serious view of this incident and ordered to arrest all the accused.

Begum Mai mother of ill-fated Shamim told the media persons that her (Shamim) in-laws were pressurizing her to accept the hand of her husband’s younger sister for her brother, but she flatly refused to accept this offer and she came back to her parent’s home in November 2012.

She was living with her parents for the last seven months. On Monday, Muhammad Din, Amir Mai and Shah Nawaz allegedly sprinkled acid on her resultantly her eye lost sight. She was removed to burn unit of Nishtar Hospital Multan. SHO Police Station Sadar Jalalpur Pirwala told media that they have instituted a case against three persons under sections 336, 324, 34, 109 PPC and Anti-terrorism act and arrested Muhammad Din.

Now, they have added the section 302 PPCF after the death of the woman. SHO said that husband of the ill-fated woman may be involved in this heinous crime.

Doctor on duty said Shamim Mai had lost her eye sight and 35 percent of her body affected due to acid hence she could not survive.
