Training on how to manage cases of harassment at work place held

Islamabad: Inquiry Committee Members and Human Resource professional received training on how to manage cases of sexual harassment at work place a three-day residential training on ‘Protection against Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2010’ organised by Mehergarh.

Representatives of State Bank of Pakistan, Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority, Institute of Rural Management, COMSATS, National University of Medical Sciences, Quaid-i-Azam University and National Press Club came to learn how to implement the law to make their workplaces dignified and handle cases of sexual harassment.

It was a comprehension training specially design to train Standing Inquiry Committee Members and trainers covering the issue of sexual harassment, myths and facts exist in the society for the conceptual clarity of the participants, detail procedures prescribed in the law for effective implementation and handling the cases of sexual harassment which have usually without any evidence and witnesses.

The requirements of compliance of the law are appointing a three-member Standing Inquiry Committee with at least on women member, awareness of law among employees, and display posters of Code of Conduct in the organization so that people have access to the information.

“I was appointed a member of Standing Inquiry Committee to handle the cases of sexual harassment as per the workplace harassment law. Had I read the complete law once, I would have realized what a huge responsibility I had been given, to maintain zero tolerance for sexual harassment in my organisation” Said one of the participants at Mehergarh’s training.

“Many misperceptions regarding the law and the issue of harassment were clarified at the training. There are a number of attitudes that are taken as normal fall under the category of harassment and covered by the law,” said Fauzia Rana, Joint Secretary National Press Club.

Thousands of responsible originations want to provide dignified and harassment free work environment for their employees both men and women, but still there are a lot of organizations that need to comply. Organizations that need help in the compliance process approach Mehergarh especially if they need their Standing Inquiry Committee Members or HR professional trained.

Former Executive Director Lok Virsa and the person behind formulating the law Dr. Fouzia Saeed was chief guest at the conclusion of training. The group asked her a lot of questions about the process of getting these laws passed and what always keeps her going at face of adversity.

“It is these challenges and cases like Zainab’s that keep my commitment strong. We all have to play our part in cleaning out our society if we want our ‘Zainabs’ to be saved,” she answered.
