LARKANA, March 2: Taking part in an essay writing competition held to highlight violence against women, students said that due to negligence of the authorities, the number of such cases was increasing every year.
The competition was jointly organised by the Sindh Educational Development Society and Know-ledge Centre Larkana on “Stop Violence against Women” here on Sunday.
Students of various educational institutions of Larkana district participated in the competition and termed violence against women inhuman and illegal.
They said that murder of a woman must not be taken lightly and should be treated as murder of humanity and the killer be given exemplary punishment.
Mentioning figures contained in a report compiled by Aurat Foundation, they said in their essays that during last year 191 women were killed in the name of honour, 38 sexually assaulted, 124 killed in family dispute on different pretexts, 45 of them attempted suicide and eight women were punished with acid thrown on them.
The essays of Gazanfar Ali Shaikh of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology, Zakia Shahani of Indus School, Saddam Hussain and Irfana Abbasi of Public School, Faiza Jarwar of Government Girls College Larkana, Saira Detho of Government Girls High School Shahdadkot and Nasreen Gaad of Knowledge Centre, were declared the best.
