Steps under way to train & promote KMC nurses: MC

Metropolitan Commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman said that Karachi Metropolitan Corporation was taking measures for imparting training to nurses besides promoting them in next grade.

“We need more nurses and improve the midwifery and medical colleges’ performance,” he said, speaking as chief guest at the 2nd Metropolitan Nursing Awards Ceremony held at the KMC Sports Complex on the World Nursing Day, here on Thursday.

Nurses presented a tableau on the services provided by them in hospitals. As many as 45 nurses received Metropolitan Nursing Award from KMC’s and other hospitals in Karachi such as National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases, National Institute of Child Diseases, Indus Hospital, Trauma Centre Civil Hospital, Agha Khan Hospital and other hospitals.

Metropolitan commissioner Dr Syed Saif-ur-Rehman said that those who are associated with medical profession should have the feelings for humanity. He said that this profession is known by nursing department. He said that in order to bring improvement in healthcare sector we need more nurses.

“KMC has adopted various measures to solve the problems being faced by the nursing staff at hospitals. We have tried to bring as much improvement in this sector as we could and make the hospitals operational within the available resources,” he said.

Syed Saif said that nursing is considered basic part of healthcare in any country. This profession receives a lot of respect and dignity all over the world. He said various plans are being executed to uplift Karachi’s infrastructure and such works would provide considerable benefits to the citizens of Karachi.

Senior director Medical and Health services Dr Beerbal Gnani said that Karachi Mayor and metropolitan commissioner were making all efforts to bring improvement in the nursing sector. He recalled they had arranged a big program of Metropolitan Nursing Award last year and continued it this year as well.

“It s an international day that is celebrated around the world on May 12 each year to mark the contributions which nurses make to society,” he said, adding that founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale also born on this day whose exemplary work for ailing humanity earned her unmatched respect and popularity. Senior director coordination Masood Alam, director nursing Government of Sindh Shabbir Jhatiyal, controller examination Khairunnissa, Margaret and others also spoke on the occasion.
