Sangat urged to allay women writers` reservations

HYDERABAD: Sindh Minister for Culture Sassui Palijo has urged the management of Sindhi Adabi Sangat, a literary organisation, to encourage women writers and allay their reservations over distribution of awards through dialogue.

Speaking at the award distribution ceremony organised by the Sangat at the Sindhi Language Authority on Sunday, the minister announced Rs500,000 grant for the construction of office for the Sangat, and Rs100,000 for nine writers whose books were selected for Sangat awards.

She said that Rs500,000 had earlier been released to the Sangat for the construction of its office and an additional grant of Rs500,000 would soon be released.

She said that culture department extended financial assistance to the flood and rain affected artists despite financial constraints and people related to culture and literature would also be given such help in future.

Ms Palijo suggested to the Sangat, Sindhi Language Authority and other literary organisations to play their role in organising conferences on Sindhi literature in Karachi and said every possible help would be given by her department to hold such events.

She said that a corner named after renowned researcher and writer late Jabbar Junejo would be inaugurated at Sindh Museum, Hyderabad, on Nov 26, where a thesis on his work would also be presented.

Sindh Minister for Auqaf Dr Rafique Banbhan lauded efforts of the Sangat for promoting Sindhi literature and underlined the need for translating Sindhi books into other languages. It would not only encourage writers but also improve the country`s image.

The minister later conferred awards on Ishtiaque Ansari, Naseer Memon, Kazi Manzar Hayat, Yousuf Sindhi, Saeed Memon, Altaf Shaikh and Liaquat Rizvi and awarded Life Time Achievement Award to renowned scholar Ibrahim Joyo.

Sindh University announcement

The University of Sindh has announced schedule for interview of candidates who had secured 45 per cent or above marks in test for admissions to MPhil degree programme in various disciplines.

According to announcement, the interview of candidates for MPhil in Economics, Public Administration and Sociology will be conducted on November 23 at 11am at the concerned departments and for MPhil in Business Administration on November 24 at 10am at the Institute of Business Administration.
