EARLY morning TV channels first gave the news of an eight-year-old being kidnapped at school, tortured and physically assaulted. The girl, the doctor and the father were later interviewed.
Although the news was extremely painful, the media seemed to have worsened it by highlighting it the way it did. For Heaven’s sake the girl at such a tender age must have been going through a trauma.
She will have scars of this incident all her life. The family is already in a state of shock. In our society people make stories and tell them here and there, making the life of the sufferer and the family more miserable.
Highlighting issues in such a way may also encourage others to do it. It is the responsibility of the media to present it as a crime in such a way that it is seen and understood as a crime.
The media should understand social and cultural values and should not become part of exploitation of such heinous crimes. The media should look into the social injustice that takes place rather than gather people to present their views like an item.
