Relatives kill woman ‘for honour’

DADU: A woman was gunned down by her uncle and cousin in the name of honour when she left home reportedly to meet her former husband, who separated himself from her under pressure of a feudal lord in Sobho Doltani village of Johi taluka on Tuesday.

Officials at the Pat Gul Mohammad police station said that Tahira Leghari was killed by her uncle Bashir Leghari and his son Parial Leghari, who escaped after committing the murder. Police brought the body to Johi taluka hospital which was later handed over to relatives after autopsy.

Ms Khatoon, mother of late Tahira, told reporters that Bashir and his son had killed her daughter.

Pat Gul Mohammad DSP said that about a month ago, Tahira’s relatives had lodged a case with the police suspecting her abduction when she left home to meet her lover and marry him. Police had recovered Tahira and produced her in a local court, he said.

He said that Tahira expressed her desire before the judge to live with her parents but just a few days later, her uncle and the cousin killed her on the pretext of karo-kari.

Sources said the woman actually wanted to live with her lover Munir Khoso for whom she had eloped but apparently she was forced to recant under pressure of the feudal lord of the area and her lover was made to disappear.

Police officials said they were conducting raids to arrest the killers.
