Rapist gets life in jail, another’s case sent to ATC

A man was sentenced to life in prison for subjecting his maternal niece to sexual assault, while the case of another suspected rapist was transferred to an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Wednesday.

A local court awarded life imprisonment to one Kareem Kamla for subjecting his maternal niece to sexual assault. Additional District & Sessions Judge (East-V) Ehsan Ali Durrani, after hearing the case and examining the facts, concluded that convict Kamla had raped his niece and was liable to face life imprisonment for such a heinous crime.

Earlier, state attorney Younus Baloch and District Public Prosecutor (East) Javed Akhtar said in their arguments that the culprit had violated all social and religious norms. The two attorneys had prayed to the court to announce a stern punishment for Kamla, who was also ordered to pay a fine to the tune of Rs100,000.

The court declared that in case the convict defaulted on paying the fine, he would have to serve an additional six month in prison. The case against him was registered at the Korangi Industrial Area police station last year.

Case sent to ATC

Another local court ordered transferring the case of a man, suspected of sexually assaulting a minor and then murdering him, to an ATC.

Accused Taswar Abbas, who recorded his confessional statement before the judicial magistrate (Malir), confessed under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code that he had kidnapped an eight-year-old boy on August 14, kept him in illegal detention, raped him and then murdered him.

The case against the accused was registered at the Steel Town police station. The court, while taking into account the confessional statement, observed that the suspected killer had committed a terrorist act.

Hence, the court noted that the investigating officer should insert the provisions dealing with the Anti-Terrorism Act 1997 and submit the charge sheet to the relevant ATC.

Earlier, on March 9, a local court had awarded a 10-year prison term to a convicted rapist. Additional District & Sessions Judge (East) Zabiha Khattak said in her verdict that the accused Rehan was found guilty of raping a young girl in 2012.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs50,000 and declared that in case of defaulting on payment, the convict would have to face another term of six months in prison. Later, on June 16, the District & Sessions Court (East) convicted and sentenced a man, Idrees Ahmed, to 33 months in jail for the kidnapping and rape of a woman last year.
