ISLAMABAD: Uzma Ayub, a rape victim, gave birth to a baby girl at a local hospital in Peshawar at 11:45pm on Thursday night, family sources said.

Bilqees Begum, the mother of Uzma, told The News on phone that Uzma had labour pains in the evening and was rushed to hospital where she gave birth to the child after suffering pain for almost six hours.

The News has also learnt that both mother and child are in a stable condition. Bilqees Begum said that the chairperson of a local nongovernmental women rights organization has taken away the baby from the hospital. It merits mention that the Uzma Ayub’s was a high profile case due to involvement of police officials in the kidnapping and repeatedly raping her for one year. The chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Ameer Haider Hoti had directed to constitute an inquiry committee soon after the news was reported in The News.

In the inquiry report, the DNA test of the accused police officials and others involved in the case was recommended after the birth of the child and later the PHC had also taken a suo moto notice in the murder case of the victim’s brother who was shot dead on December 9, 2011 on the premises of court in Karak in the presence of police officials.
