President Links Devastating Smog Crisis to Pakistan’s Clean Energy Goals

Islamabad, 26-Jan-2026 (PPI): President Asif Ali Zardari has highlighted the severe social and economic costs of air pollution, describing the annual dense smog as a "harsh and recurring reality" that causes fatal traffic accidents, widespread travel disruption, and a public health crisis where hospitals treat patients struggling to breathe.

In a message marking the International Day of Clean Energy, the President affirmed that Pakistan has placed the transition to clean energy at the centre of its national agenda, citing the country"s vulnerability to climate change. He noted a key commitment under the Nationally Determined Contributions is to achieve a 30 per cent share for electric vehicles by 2030.

President Zardari stated that Pakistan"s existing energy mix already comprises 35 per cent clean and renewable sources. He explained that the nation is committed to pursuing low-carbon development pathways, as outlined in its National Climate Change Policy, while safeguarding economic growth and social well-being.

To advance sustainable development goals, the government is prioritising energy efficiency and conservation. This shift is being driven by policy reforms, the modernisation of energy infrastructure, the deployment of renewable technologies, and enhanced institutional coordination.

The President emphasised that the move towards clean energy is not merely an environmental imperative but also a significant opportunity for economic growth, job creation, and technological advancement in the country.

Concluding his message, President Zardari called for a reaffirmed national resolve to build a climate-resilient and energy-secure Pakistan. He also stressed the nation"s role as a responsible global partner in supporting the adoption of sustainable technologies for the planet"s future.
