Police accused of harassing relatives of gang-raped victim

LAHORE – Police are harassing and pressurizing family and well wishers of Tayyeba, seven years old orphan girl who was gang-rapped by four men on March 11, for giving statements in favour of two suspended police officials-DSP and SHO-during the police investigation.

The IG had suspended these officials for supporting the main accused, says Ms Nusrat, mother of Tayyeba.

She said the police had arrested Muhammad Shafiq who was supporting her in the case and in treatment of her victim daughter.

Muhammad Ilyas, father of Shafiq, told the Nation that on Saturday night heavy contingents of police headed by SI Rana Akram of Narang Mandi police station raided his house and arrested his son Shafiq without telling him what was his son’s fault. He said neither any FIR was registered against his son nor he was wanted in any case.

He said the police was harassing them for helping the minor’s family. He said suspended DSP Khadim Hussain and SHO Riaz Hussain had been pressurizing them to convince Nusrat, the complainant of the FIR, to give statement in favour of them before the inquiry officer so that they could be reinstated. He said as they denied doing this, Narang Mandi police favouring their suspended colleagues, had arrested his son. The police officials were not disclosing his whereabouts as he had been confined in illegal custody.

Jamshed, another supporter of the victim family, told the media persons that he was also fearing police wrath as police time and again approached him to give statement in favour of the suspended officials and the accused rapists but he denied.

It is pertinent to mention here that on March 11 allegedly four accused including Muzamil and three brothers Zubair, Talha and Muzafar gang-raped minor Tayyeba in Sidhanwali village of district Sheikhupura when she was going back to her home from school. But the local police favouring the main accused Zubair did not mention his name in the FIR for which the IG suspended the DSP and the SHO. However, the girl is still in the hospital and former chief minister Punjab Mian Shahbaz Sharif was bearing all the expenses of her treatment.
