Paralysed woman loses battle for life

ISLAMABAD:
A paralysed woman, subjected to violence by a Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) staffer lost the battle for life on Monday morning.

A male nurse had been booked and suspended from service for attempting to sexually assault the mentally-challenged woman with multiple health problems at the hospital’s surgical ward’s intensive care unit (ICU).

The male nurse allegedly attempted to rape her around 2am on April 10. The hospital administration registered an FIR against Krishan Kumar with the Karachi Company police station on the complaint of the woman’s father.

The woman was said to be suffering from a rare immune disorder which affects body’s peripheral nervous system. The disease had affected spinal cord of the woman and paralysed her.

“She was paralysed and was on ventilator. Since yesterday she was in serious condition,” the university’s Vice-Chancellor Dr Javed Akram told The Express Tribune.
He said the woman died at 7am on Monday, adding that in such cases mortality rate was 99 per cent. The victim was a resident of Tehsil Topi, District Swabi, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa.

The suspect who was arrested by the Special Investigative Cell of Islamabad Police from Haripur is currently in Adiala jail. Police are still investigating the case.
