No law to stop girls’ trade in country, LHC told

LAHORE: The Punjab government informed the Lahore High Court on Thursday that there is no law in the country to stop the sale and purchase of girls for the purpose of marriage only.

This was stated by Assistant Advocate General Rabiyya Bajwa in connection with the case of a young girl (S) who was sold twice for the purpose of marriage. She further stated that no government institution provided shelter and residence to destitute women on a permanent basis. She said it was an old tradition in some parts of the country that a girl’s family demanded money from the groom’s family for marriage of its daughter; however, there was no law to stop this old tradition.

Majeed, the former husband of the girl, filed a writ petition in the LHC for the recovery of the girl and stated that Ms Naziran wanted to get the girl married to her nephew Javed. During the course of hearing, it was revealed that Abdul Majeed, a resident of Narowal, had contracted marriage with S after paying Rs100,000 to her family in Charsadda. Later, he divorced the girl and sold the girl to one Naziran Bibi for Rs125,000. DPO Narwoal produced the girl in the court and court sent her to Darul Amaan.
