Murdered girl identified, suspect arrested

KARACHI: The body of a young girl found late Friday night in the Gulistan-e-Jauhar police limits has formally been identified by her family. Moreover, the investigation team has arrested the girl’s fiancÈ as a suspect in the murder case.

Twenty-year-old Marium Hussain was tortured and shot dead before her body was dumped on the main road opposite Jauhar Complex. The police had initially shifted the body to a hospital for post-mortem and further legal formalities.

On Saturday afternoon, members of her family, including her father, Mushtaq Hussain, had approached the Gulistan-e-Jauhar police station for the custody of the body. They said they had seen the victim’s picture in an evening newspaper.

They family informed the police that Marium was educated and worked at a garment factory. They lived in Dhrang Agency (situated along the Super Highway in Gulzar-e-Hijri).

On Friday evening, Marium’s fiancÈ, Shahbaz, had come to her house to take the girl out for a drive. The family granted permission to them and the two left around 09:00 p.m. When the couple did not return home, Marium’s family members tried calling Shahbaz up, but his cellphone was not responding. They checked with other relatives, but no one had seen the two.

The next thing they knew was that Marium’s body was found late Friday night. The family recorded their statement after the completing the funeral formalities.

The Investigating Officer (IO) for the case, Fareed, after getting details from the family started conducting raids for the arrest of Shahbaz. They apprehended him and took him to the police station.

During the course of the investigation, the accused told the police that after leaving Marium’s house, the two had gone to Sea View where they spent a few hours. They then went to Kundan Broast for dinner, after which Shahbaz claims he dropped Marium off home around 12:15 a.m. and then went home.

IO Fareed said, however, that the police did not believe Shahbaz entirely, and he was under further interrogation.
