LAHORE: A woman was hospitalised for injuries suffered in a mob beating in Green Town area on Friday.
Police said some people had caught the woman, later identified as Salma alias Sheerin, and beaten her up alleging that she was a member of a criminal gang and was trying to break into a house to kidnap a child. They said preliminary investigation showed that she had been involved in some thefts. They said it appeared that she had broken into the house with the intention to steal something.
Residents of the area told the police that she and her three accomplices had tried to break into a house in the morning. They said the family residing in the house had woken up on hearing the sounds of their footsteps and tried to catch them but they fled. They said some members of the family had chased the suspects, alerting the neighbours to join them in the chase. They caught the woman after a short run and started beating her up.
A police team soon arrived on the scene. She was handed over to the police after the complainants were assured by senior officers that action would be taken against her in accordance with the law.
The suspect was later sent to Jinnah Hospital for treatment of her injuries.
Police said she was a resident of Shera Kot and was wanted for several cases registered in Sabzazar and Gulshan-i-Ravi stations.
The Green Town SHO said it appeared that she and her accomplices had broken into a house for theft. He said they would register a case after completing their investigation of the matter. They would also register a case against those who had taken the law into their hands, he added.
