KARACHI: A sessions court sentenced on Wednesday two men to life imprisonment in a case pertaining to the murder of a transgender person.
The suspects – Muhammad Ali Hajano and Umair Khan – were found guilty of killing Fida Hussain in September 2009 in Clifton.
District South’s additional district and sessions judge Sikandar Ameer Pahore, who conducted the hearing in the judicial complex inside Karachi Central Jail, pronounced the verdict after recording evidence of the witnesses and concluding arguments from both sides.
The judge also ordered the convicts to pay a fine of Rs50,000 each.
In its verdict, the judge observed that k* was the star witness of the case, who had not only identified both the accused before a magistrate during an identification parade and recorded his statement under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code but also specifically deposed against the accused persons before the trial court.
“The documentary evidence and statements of other witnesses also supported the testimony of star witness and the case stood proved beyond any shadow of doubt,” the judge observed.
On behalf of the state, a murder case under the Sections 302 (punishment for premeditated murder) and 34 (common intention) of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) was registered at the Boat Basin police station.
The police had tracked down the accused persons in January 2009 and filed charge sheet against the two in over 35 cases, including robbery, attempted murder, attempt to outrage the modesty of women, street crimes, illicit weapons and Hussain’s murder at the Boat Basin, Darakhshan, Clifton, Defence and Gizri police stations.
