Media moot on adult education
LAHORE, Dec 6: An NGO working for the promotion of literacy, Pakistan Association for Adult Education, is holding a media conference here on Dec 8.
The UNESCO director in Pakistan, Ms Ingeborg Brienes, is likely to deliver a keynote address and NGO president and former ambassador Atiya Inayatullah will discuss the national plan of action for literacy with the editors and senior journalists at the conference.
In a statement issued here on Saturday, Ms Inayatullah said media could play a leading role by highlighting the importance of literacy and help catch up with the rest of the world.
She said Japan which has no natural resources had set an excellent example of establishing a literate society and there was no reason why Pakistan could not follow them.
“With the increase in the rate of literacy not only the process of development and progress could be accelerated but newspaper circulation would also increase. Thus the print media is an important stakeholder in the literacy promotion campaign.”
