Man held for ‘raping’ doctor remanded in police custody

KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Wednesday remanded in police custody a man for allegedly raping a female doctor.

Police claimed to have arrested the suspect for his alleged involvement in sexually assaulting the lady doctor on the night of Nov 14 within the jurisdiction of the Frere police station.

On Wednesday, the investigating officer produced the suspect before the judicial magistrate (south) to seek his physical remand for interrogation and investigation.

The IO submitted that the suspect had reportedly befriended the victim and later they met on the night between Nov 14 and 15.

He submitted that after spending some time together the suspect drove her in his car to his flat, where he allegedly subjected her to a sexual assault. He also threatened her of dire consequences in case she disclosed the incident to anyone, the IO added.

He further submitted that after registration of the FIR the suspect was immediately taken into custody.

He added that the victim was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) for a medical examination and a report in this regard was awaited.

The IO said that the custody of the suspect was required for interrogation since investigation was still incomplete. He requested for 14-day physical remand of the suspect in police custody. However, the magistrate remanded the suspect in police custody for three days for interrogation, directing the IO to produce him on the next date along with an investigation report.

The victim is said to be a US national of Pakistani origin.
