Karachi: A rapist-cum-murderer, already serving a lengthy prison term for a woman’s murder, was sentenced to life in prison on Saturday.
Rizwan Ali a relative of Shabana, forcibly entered the house of Mohammed Anwer in the night between November 12 and 13, 2006 within the remit of Gulshan-e-Iqbal police station and when he found that Anwer was not at home, his base instincts began to have the better of him and he tried to rape Shabana, Anwer’s wife.
Upon her resistance, he slaughtered her with a sharp edged knife. She struggle to run away from the rooftop of the house and fell from corrugated sheet roof. The area people came out of their houses when they heard her cries and saw a man running out of the house.
The people grabbed Rizwan and handed him over to the police. The witnesses who testified, did not, however, mention that rape was committed, only the Investigation Officer in his report submitted that the convict first tried to rape her but failed due to the struggle by the woman.
The Additional District and Sessions Judge, East, Judicial Complex, Obaid Ahmed Khan, handed down life sentence U/S 302 B (punished with death or imprisonment for life as Ta’zir having regard to the facts and circumstances of the case, if the proof in either of the forms specified in Section 304 is not available).
In his final observation, the judge said that no proper motive behind the murder was established, but strong circumstantial evidence proved that offence was committed.
He was remanded back to jail along with warrants of conviction to serve his remaining sentence, the verdict said.
