Man forced to divorce wife after train chase

SAHIWAL: A man on Wednesday divorced his wife allegedly under duress just a few days after court marriage.

The woman refused to go with her parents and the police sent her to Darul Aman.

Shabbir Dillo, 28, and Frazana, daughter of a landlord, fled to Gujranwala and contracted court marriage on Feb 9. They were about to move to Karachi when elders of the two families stopped them from proceeding.

The couple was injured while trying to flee from the train they had boarded to reach Karachi.

The woman’s family belonging to the influential Kathiya caste prevailed upon the man to divorce her.

The man signed the divorce papers while being treated at the surgical ward of the DHQ hospital. As the woman resisted and refused to accompany her parents, the police shifted her to Darul Aman.

District Police Officer Syed Khurram Ali told Dawn that there was no application about divorce under duress. He said the police were investigating.
